David lives in Eden Gardens in Solana Beach, in a 1970s single-story stucco home whose frames were still sound but whose seals had failed and whose sashes rattled in every breeze. We recommended vinyl retrofit inserts set inside the old frames, so the stucco and the interior trim stayed exactly as they were. All 11 windows went in over an estimated 1 to 2 days, an estimated $5,200 to $8,400 job, with no stucco patching and no paint touch-up inside.

Choose a window style and a frame to see what an insert of that kind typically costs per window, how long it lasts and the maker's warranty behind it. Most retrofit buyers land on vinyl double-hungs or sliders, while beach houses in Cardiff-by-the-Sea step up to a fiberglass casement.

Retrofit or Full-Frame: How We Decide at Each Opening

A retrofit works when the old frame is square, dry and solid, and a full-frame install is the right call the moment we find rot, a soft sill or water stains below the opening. We decide window by window, not house by house, so one wet bathroom frame in an Old Del Mar cottage never forces a tear-out on the other ten.

Most aluminum frames from the 1970s and 1980s tracts in Calavera Hills and La Costa are still structurally fine even when the glass has fogged and the rollers have quit. Those frames, just as common in New Encinitas and Old Poway, take a flush-fin retrofit insert whose wide exterior fin laps over the old metal and seals against the stucco face. Linda's 13-window La Costa ranch went this way, every opening a retrofit insert changed in one visit. Wood frames are a different story near the coast, where the marine layer keeps west-facing sills in Leucadia and Cardiff-by-the-Sea damp for weeks at a time.

We test each sill with an awl, check the corners for daylight and look for stucco cracks fanning out from the bottom corners. A crack there usually means water has been running behind the wall, and that opening goes full-frame with new flashing tape lapped into the paper.

Retrofit Inserts vs Full-Frame Tear-Out by Window Type

Retrofit keeps the wall intact and costs the least per opening, while full-frame fixes the hidden damage a retrofit would only cover up.

Retrofit Window Cost in Carlsbad

Retrofit windows are estimated at roughly $450 to $1,400 per opening in Aviara and Calavera Hills homes, and the window count, the glass package and how many openings turn out to need a full-frame install move the total most. A whole single-story Carlsbad home of 10 to 15 retrofits is typically estimated at $8,500 to $12,000. A whole-house, two-story home of 15 to 30 windows is typically estimated at $14,000 to $24,000, as Brian's 22-window job in Harmony Grove Village showed.

Because nobody cuts stucco, there is no lath to repair, no color-matched finish coat and no interior drywall return, and that is usually the line that makes full-frame quotes jump. David's 11-window home in Eden Gardens landed at an estimated $5,200 to $8,400 for exactly that reason.

The jobs that cost more are mixed ones, common in older Carlsbad Village bungalows, where most openings go retrofit and two or three go full-frame at roughly $800 to $1,500 each.

All retrofit prices here are estimates for Carlsbad homes and can change once we probe the frames on site. The written quote after the final measure sets your final price and your install schedule.

Permits, Egress and Safety Glass on a Retrofit Job

A retrofit still needs a building permit in Carlsbad, because Title 24 asks the city inspector to check each new window's U-factor and SHGC against its NFRC sticker, and a DIY retrofit most often fails on bedroom egress and safety glass.

A retrofit insert shrinks the clear opening slightly, so a bedroom window that barely met the emergency escape size under CBC R310 can fail once the insert goes in. We measure the net opening before ordering, and if a bedroom window would come up short we switch that one opening to a fiberglass casement or a full-frame unit. Glass within reach of a door, a tub or a low sill must be tempered under CBC R308, and that rule applies to retrofits exactly as it does to new construction.

Retrofit Window Materials

Vinyl is the default retrofit frame in Del Mar Heights and Harmony Grove tracts, and our vinyl replacement windows page covers the colors and grids. Homes near the beach in Solana Beach and Old Del Mar often step up to fiberglass retrofit inserts, and anyone chasing a cooler west wall should compare the glass packages on our energy-efficient windows page.

Why Homeowners Trust Our Retrofit Crew

In 13 years of retrofit work our measure tech has probed every frame before anything is ordered, and the crew lead who sets the inserts is the one who signed off on that frame check. Every retrofit carries our 2-year workmanship warranty on every installation, and the maker typically adds 20 years on the glass and 10 years on non-glass parts, so meet the team before your estimate.

Retrofit Window Service Areas

Our crews set retrofit inserts across a 30-mile radius of Carlsbad, from Bressi Ranch and Aviara to Solana Beach homes like Eden Gardens, retrofit work in Encinitas and Lake San Marcos lakeside houses. Poway, Bonsall and every other community we cover are on our service area page.

Related Window Services

A retrofit job in Rancho Santa Fe or Fairbanks Ranch often grows to include quieter windows for street-facing bedrooms or patio door replacement in the same visit, and association boards replacing a whole elevation book our HOA window projects team. Owners who want every opening done at once book a whole-house full window replacement on one schedule, and homes with sound frames often start with a planned window repair survey instead.

Retrofit Window Questions From Carlsbad Homeowners

Will a retrofit window damage my stucco?

No, a retrofit insert sits inside the old frame and its flush fin seals against the stucco face, so nothing is cut or patched, even on the textured stucco common in Elfin Forest and Harmony Grove.

How do I know if my frames are good enough for a retrofit?

Sound frames are square, dry and firm when probed, as most Olivenhain and Bonsall aluminum frames still are; soft wood, stains below the sill or cracks fanning from the corners mean full-frame.

How much does a retrofit window cost?

A retrofit vinyl double-hung is typically estimated at $450 to $950 per window, a fiberglass casement insert at roughly $650 to $1,200, and the written quote sets your final price.

How long does a retrofit job take?

Each double-hung insert typically takes an estimated 45 to 90 minutes, so most single-story homes from Carlsbad to Del Mar are finished in an estimated 1 to 2 days.

Do retrofit windows need a permit?

Yes, a Title 24 permit is typically required even when no stucco is cut, and our crew pulls it and books the inspection.

Does a retrofit make the glass smaller?

Slightly, because the new frame sits inside the old one, which is why we check every bedroom for egress before ordering.

Can some windows be retrofit and others full-frame?

Yes, we decide each opening on its own condition and price the full-frame openings separately on your quote.

Frames, Glass and Finishes

The process

How a Window Job Runs

  1. The measure

We check every frame, sill and the stucco around it, then laser-measure each opening for the unit that goes in it.

  2. The written quote

Frame material, glass package, label values and install method arrive in writing before anything is ordered.

  3. Install and flash

Each window is set on a sloped sill pan, flashed and sealed, with the NFRC sticker left on for the inspector.

  4. The final walk

We open and lock every window and door with you, and the city signs off the Title 24 permit.
